At 30 June 2018:

  • Nine in ten (90% or 10,613 prisoners) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were male. Similarly, for the non-Indigenous prisoner population, just over nine in ten prisoners were male (92% or 28,701 prisoners). (Table 21)
  • The most common offences/charges for both male and female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were:
    • Acts intended to cause injury (35% or 3,672 prisoners, and 33% or 401 prisoners, respectively); and
    • Unlawful entry with intent (14% or 1,483 prisoners and 16% or 195 prisoners, respectively).
  • For non-Indigenous prisoners, the most common offences/charge for both males and females was Illicit drug offences (20% or 5,592 prisoners, and 29% or 703 prisoners, respectively). (Table 5)
